Madekwe was born South London, England into a mixed family. The father of her is Nigerian and Swiss as well as her mom is English. She was raised in the south of a London community estate, where she attended The Brit School at age fourteen. She received her Bachelor of Arts in acting from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
